The progressive linking and testing of system components to merge their functional and technical characteristics into a comprehensive, interoperable system. Or else, simply put System Integration is:
Assembling many components so they can work together as a system.  System Integration requires two things: understanding and knowledge. Understanding of the customer's requirements and the knowledge of how it can be done. This in turn assumes the knowledge of the functional parameters and capabilities of every system component and how they interoperate with each other.
